Everton received two bids for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney earlier this summer which were rejected, and there has been little public progress on a potential deal in recent weeks.

Weโ€™re told Hackney wanted a move to Everton despite interest from their Premier League rivals, although the Toffees were unable to get a deal done. Evertonโ€™s bids for the 24-year-old, who was named the Championshipโ€™s player of the year for the 2025-26 season, are believed to be in the region of ยฃ12 million and ยฃ15 million.

He scored 5 league goals and added 7 assists while leading all Championship midfielders in progressive carries.

Middlesbroughโ€™s poor display coincided with Hackneyโ€™s absence through injury as the north-east side automatically fell out of promotion contention before losing the play-off final to Hull City. The club are now reluctant to sanction the sale of the academy product as Hackney only has 12 months left on his current contract.

Boro are believed to be demanding a fee in excess of ยฃ20 million, with Crystal Palace also pursuing the player. Journalist Alan Nixon has provided an update on the summer saga and it appears to be a positive for Everton.

Nixon claims Everton are willing to โ€œget closeโ€ to a fee of ยฃ20m in a bid to secure a deal, but Palace are not prepared to match that figure.

However, the Eagles are instead prepared to offer 21-year-old midfielder David Ozo as a sweetener in any deal. Ozo spent the last two seasons on loan at Championship side Derby County, where he made 47 appearances.

Taxi for Everton

Posted 06/26/2026 at 12:21:13

Mark โ€“ I saw what you did there.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 12:37:14

I think weโ€™ll take him, heโ€™s a good player but itโ€™ll be a waste if we donโ€™t improve whatโ€™s around him.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 14:05:46

Heโ€™s a great Andrew, Boro were expecting automatic promotion, then Hackney got injured and their form dipped. Just made the playoffs, then the Saints beat them but screwed up with spygate and then lost the final. He was the championship player of the year! If we get Jack, Iโ€™d play him in 10, he can do wonders there! I would go back to Chelsea, take George and play him on the left and Ndiaye on the right! KDH and Hackney in the middle, Jimmy Def in the middle, Ghana as backup!

Buy it!

ยฃ20 million is a pittance for a good player.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 14:27:39

In my opinion, nothing will happen before July 1st.

The club wants to sell Iroegbunam for around ยฃ20 million, with his value depreciated to ยฃ3 million by that date. This will increase our profits and offset the Hackney deal.

Letโ€™s not forget that we are already prepared to buy Rol for ยฃ20 million.

A good player (and likely to improve) in a vital position who could allow Garner to get a little further forward where he can show off his creativity more.

He could be a very good, long-term replacement for Gueye, and in the current market that seems like a very โ€œdoableโ€ price. This is exactly the kind of deal that we should be very focused on getting done as soon as possible.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 15:30:26

An absolute bargain.

Championship player of the season and not to be snubbed.

A player of the right age and undoubtedly keen to prove himself at the highest level, go for it!

Posted 06/26/2026 at 16:28:01

Considering what we paid for Dibling, ยฃ20 million is not worth arguing about.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 19:24:01

The fans should send Everton away. Donโ€™t buy anything from the store, weโ€™re stingy bastards who always save money.

And while Iโ€™m on one, where the hell is Moyes, the red prick. He should damn well be here to buy the right back we need, the striker we need and a new centre-back.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 20:23:53

Bobby, he told the recruiting team what he neededโ€ฆ

Now they have to produce goods while he sits and relaxes.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 20:51:19

Bobby,

I think youโ€™ve got the wrong end of this bullshit stick. If you want Everton to spend more money on buying better players and give you the opportunity to get behindโ€ฆ

How can I put this delicately?

Perhaps you should think about other ways of supporting the club, buying merchandise, stadium toursโ€ฆ because only with higher commercial income can we move up the net spend table.

You know, it makes sense.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 20:57:03

Relax, world class recruiting team.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 21:45:33

The only thing the recruitment team needs to find for Moyes is a taxi!!!

Frustrated, disconnected and disillusioned with Wirral.

Posted 06/26/2026 at 23:09:11

So, negotiations are moving forward.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 10:39:19

Is he good at right-back?

I guess weโ€™ll find out soon.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 12:58:24

This only makes sense if Irogbunam is for sale. Otherwise, Iโ€™m afraid that Rawl, Armstrong and Hackney (if we sign him) will be fighting for the same midfield position.

But we donโ€™t have a single player in the right-back position and we donโ€™t have a worthy left-back to back up Mikolenko.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 13:08:56

Michael @ 12,

I did a tour, went to games, bought merchandise โ€“ and not just for myself: I have two sons. But what will I and we fans get in return? To hell with everyone.

We have a manager (this really hurt me) who went to America to comment on how shitty Scotland is and discuss our next season when he should be here buying players.

Honestly, I wish theyโ€™d get rid of it and bring in Glasner. Iโ€™m angry: we have to play in Europe.

Since the turn of the century, Everton are the only Football League club not to have won a trophy or been promoted. This is quite an unfortunate distinction for a club with such a rich history.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 13:44:53

Good staffing is everything.

Dibling joined for over ยฃ35 million, lost a season of football, is worthless and doesnโ€™t fit Moyesโ€™ defensive strategy.

Unlike Bournemouthโ€™s ยฃ24.5m Ryan, an overnight success in the Premier League who started for Brazil at the World Cup and is worth more every day.

Recruitment is an integral part of success. I canโ€™t comment on Hackney or the other victims, but I hope this recruitment team is up to the task.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 16:27:13

Since the turn of the century, Everton have been one of the few Football League clubs not to be relegated.
More positive than no promotion because you have to get relegated first.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 20:26:09

If Leeds are hoping to increase their rejected ยฃ20m bid for Shea Charles to around ยฃ25m due to his impressive performances in the Championship with Southamptonโ€ฆ

I would imagine that this is a kind of reference point for Hayden Hackney.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 21:23:24

Bobby, I was wrong. Apologies.

Newport Country, relegated to League Two in 2013, have not been relegated since 2000 and are still in League Two.
Salford City, promoted to League Two in 2019, have not been relegated since 2000 and are still in League Two.
Bromley were relegated to League Two in 2024 and were promoted to League One last season, as are Spurs, Arsenal, United, Chelsea and that bunch, who were also not relegated but did win something.

As for the other 83 teams celebrating promotion, they all did so because they had had one or up to seven relegations in the last 25 years (Rotherham United).

And then thereโ€™s Everton, who havenโ€™t been relegated since 2000 (since 1952, actually), but havenโ€™t celebrated anything โ€“ a cup win, a league win, promotion.
Personally, I would take non-relegation more than promotion. Relegation to celebrate promotion seems like a waste of time. But Bobby, if thatโ€™s what you want. . . Well, I donโ€™t know.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 21:51:42

Ajay No. 17, rather, we do not have a worthy left-back who could replace Mikolenko.

Posted 06/27/2026 at 22:01:02

Phil (22),

We were relegated in 1951, not 1952.
