Daniel Muñoz scored for the second game in a row as Colombia booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Crystal Palace defender finally beat heroic Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, leaving the Africans needing a win over Uzbekistan in their final group game to keep their hopes alive.

Edo Kayembe fired a shot over the bar for DR Congo in the opening minutes but it was a rare foray as Colombia dominated the early exchanges with eight shots in the opening 20 minutes.

Mpasi was forced to make saves from John Arias, Muñoz, who grabbed the rebound but was ruled offside, James Rodriguez and Gustavo Puerta, while Luis Diaz deflected the ball wide after hitting the goalkeeper’s foot.

Democratic Republic of Congo, who had left too much space early on, strengthened after the hydration break as rain fell in Guadalajara, Yoan Wissa almost taking advantage of a free back pass and coming close to connecting with Arter Masuaku’s teasing cross.

Mpasi saved again from Diaz to start the second half, but he was eventually brought down 14 minutes from time when Muñoz hit him at the near post from a deflection.

Having waited so long to beat Mpasi, Dias managed to do it twice in the next four minutes as the game began, but both were ruled out – the first for a push from a defender before he flicked the ball over the goalkeeper, the second for offside.

Mpasi was forced into another save by Juan Quintero before his opponent Camila Vargas had her first shot on target in stoppage time, deflecting Nathanael Mbuku’s long-range shot and deflecting Chancel Mbemba’s header from a corner.
