Firstly, South Africa beat South Korea 1-0 to claim one of the top two places in their group, meaning South Korea, who have a better goal difference than Scotland, dropped to third.

Ecuador then pulled off a surprise 2-1 win over Germany to finish third in their group with four points and book their place in the round of 16.

Sweden then beat Japan 1-1 and also came out of third place with four points.

Scotlandโ€™s chances of qualifying then dropped to 6.89%, according to Opta, which dropped to 5.26% after Paraguay broke a stalemate with Australia that suited both sides.

Uruguayโ€™s loss to Spain was a rare bit of good news, but Iranโ€™s draw with Egypt leaves them with just a 0.07% chance of progressing.

The results leave Scotland 10th out of the 12 teams currently in third place and on the verge of missing out on a play-off place.

If the third-placed teams in the standings finish with the same number of points, the ranking is determined by goal difference.

There are now only three groups left to complete and Scotland need multiple results to go their way.

They need Austria to beat Algeria by at least two goals or for Algeria to win by four goals or more.

They also need Ghana to beat Croatia by three goals or more and either DR Congo and Uzbekistan to draw or the latter to win by a maximum of three goals.
