Ten months before the elections in North Rhine-Westphalia: Hendrik Wüst's poll failure, a record for the AfD

According to a new poll in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Black-Green government remains stable, but the CDU and SPD are noticeably losing. On the other hand, the AfD achieved its best result in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Ten months before the North Rhine-Westphalia state elections, the Black-Green government could continue to retain its majority, according to a poll. However, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst’s CDU would have to suffer significant losses for the second time in a row if state elections were held now. The AfD will come into second place for the first time – together with the SPD. This is the result of a trend in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was investigated by the public opinion research institute Infratest dimap on behalf of the WDR Westpol magazine.

The CDU received 32 percent in Sunday’s question – 3 percentage points less than at the beginning of February. The SPD, led by party leader Jochen Ott, also loses 3 percentage points and will now stand at 17 percent. The AfD achieved an increase of 2 points and therefore 17 percent, which WDR reports is its best value in the NRW trend.

The Greens also scored 2 points and currently have a score of 15 percent. The FDP reached five percent (plus one point) in the poll for the first time since April 2024 and will therefore continue to be represented in the state parliament. The left could return to the Düsseldorf parliament after the break – with an unchanged 6 percent. All other parties combined make up 8 percent.

Results at a glance

CDU: 32 percent (-3) AfD: 17 percent (+2) SPD: 17 percent (-3) Greens: 15 percent (+2) Left: 6 percent (+-0) FDP: 5 percent (+1)

Satisfaction with state government has dropped significantly since February, with only 42 percent – minus 6 percentage points – of those surveyed satisfied and 53 percent – plus 4 points – dissatisfied, according to public opinion polls. The assessment of Prime Minister Wüst’s work has also decreased: only 42 percent of respondents are satisfied (minus 3 points), and now 40 percent are dissatisfied (plus 2 points).

It also shows that transport and infrastructure problems have replaced migration as the most important policy issue, with 31 percent of those surveyed saying it is “one of the most pressing issues that needs to be addressed,” it said.

The second place was taken by the school and educational complex with 24 percent of responses. According to the NRW trend, the long-standing issue of migration continues to be one of the most important issues for 20 percent, followed by the issue of social injustice.

According to WDR, the survey is representative. From 22 to 25 June, 1,139 eligible voters in North Rhine-Westphalia were surveyed by telephone or online.

The SPD is also losing in federal power

The SPD also continues to fall out of favor with voters across the country. In the Sunday trend collected weekly by the polling institute Insa for Bild am Sonntag, the Social Democrats lose another percentage point and now stand at twelve percent. In the federal elections, 16.4 percent voted for the SPD.

According to the current survey, the EU’s share is stagnating at 22 percent compared to the previous week. It still lags significantly behind the AfD, whose share remains at 29 percent. There is also no movement among the Greens and Left; According to the poll, they will receive 13 and 10 percent in next Sunday’s elections. The FDP was able to score one point, but with four percent it will still not be able to return to the Bundestag.
