Live updates: US and Iran trade more blows as Tehran threatens to end talks

Iran has struck US military targets in the Middle East after the US carried out new attacks on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz. And in Lebanon, Israeli forces attacked a southern city after Israel agreed to withdraw some troops from the area.

Timeline of recent escalation:

Iran attacked a Singapore-flagged container ship near the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump called the move a โ€œstupid violationโ€ of the original agreement to end the war.

The US military has been conducting strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, targeting Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar sites.

The US discovered a โ€œcouple of dronesโ€ as Iran says it carried out strikes on US military targets in the Middle East, but the drones did not reach their target, a US official says.

Hours later, the U.S. military launched new strikes against Iranian targets โ€œin direct response to ongoing Iranian aggression,โ€ according to U.S. Central Command.

Iran then launches missiles and drones at US targets in neighboring countries, including Kuwait and Bahrain, Reuters reported, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. There were no casualties in the United States or serious damage to facilities, Reuters reported, citing a US official.

Meanwhile in Lebanon, airstrikes hit the southern town of Nabatiya al-Fawqa, a day after Israel signed an agreement to withdraw troops from some areas. On Saturday, the Israeli military said it had killed Hezbollah militants in the Nabatiyeh region of southern Lebanon and dismantled a rocket launcher, according to a Telegram statement.

Why is this important: The attacks violate an agreement between the United States and Iran signed earlier this month. The purpose of the agreement was to expand the ceasefire and resume normal maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump threatened new military action if Tehran continues to carry out strikes. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the US strikes violated the ceasefire and would โ€œlead to a complete halt in all diplomatic processes,โ€ Reuters reported.
