The National Weather Service has issued an updated winter storm warning and winter weather advisory for areas where Idaho, Montana and Wyoming border each other.
The new winter storm arrived just in time for many in the region to begin preparations for the 250th anniversary of the United States, while millions of people prepare for the Fourth of July. Residents in the region are being asked to consider postponing rural travel this weekend and into the early part of the week.
People should consider postponing travel through backcountry and higher elevations. If travel is absolutely necessary, consider bringing a winter storm kit that includes items such as tire chains, auxiliary cables, a flashlight, a shovel, blankets and extra clothing, the National Weather Service said. โAlso bring water, a first aid kit and anything else that will help you survive if you find yourself stranded.โ
Three feet of snow expected
Some areas of Montana are expected to see โheavy, wetโ snow, and the Lake Georgetown area could see up to three feet of snow from Saturday night into Tuesday. Residents in the region are being warned to prepare for hazardous conditions.
โPlan for winter-like conditions in rural and higher elevation areas. Cold temperatures, wind and wet snow will increase the risk of hypothermia. Heavy, wet snow could down trees, blocking access to rural roads,โ the National Weather Service said in a warning.
Coincidentally, at the July 4th peak, Idaho is expected to receive about a foot of snow over the next three days. Meanwhile, the Pitchstone Plateau will see the most snow in Wyoming over the next few days, at eight inches.
Along the Montana-Wyoming border, near the Beartooth Mountains, snow will ease or even stop for a while Sunday through Sunday evening. Snow will return Sunday night and continue through Monday and Tuesday morning.
In addition to heavy snowfall, the area will also experience high winds of 55 mph, which could cause travel issues.
Winter storm warnings and winter weather warnings will remain in effect until Monday evening.
