Munich (dpa/lby) – After a temperature record in Bavaria of 40.8 degrees, there is no sign of a cold snap anytime soon. “The peak of the heat wave could be reached today,” said meteorologist Martin Schwienbacher of the German Weather Service (DWD) in Munich. According to him, it was initially impossible to predict whether the preliminary record value would be reached again today.
Today is forecast to be sunny and exceptionally hot. It is possible that similar values will be reached as on Friday, when Kitzingen near Wurzburg recorded a provisional record high of 40.8 degrees. According to Schwienbacher, it even remained very warm at high altitudes at night – partly in a tropical climate. Nights in which the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees are considered tropical.
Unusual heat
A preliminary temperature of 24.7 degrees was measured overnight at the Sandberg measuring station in Rennes – an all-time record at the station since 1965, Schwienbacher said. This makes it clear how unusual this heat wave is. “We’ve never had anything like this before, especially early in the summer.” In general, maximum temperatures are usually observed in July or August.
In addition to the intense heat stress, Bavaria still faces a high, sometimes even very high risk of forest fires due to the ongoing drought – so be careful if you want to cool off in the shade of oaks, beeches and conifers.
It’s also unusually warm on the rivers right now. On Friday, Main temporarily reached 30 degrees. In the morning the temperature again exceeded 28 degrees. The Danube is also heating up quickly these days. If river water is too hot, it can have a negative impact on wildlife.
There will be thunderstorms on Sunday, but there will be no cold snap
The DWD forecast calls for another sunny start for Sunday. However, thunderstorms may develop later in the day. Heavy rain, hail and gusty winds are possible in many places this afternoon. There is a risk of severe weather in some areas. However, the temperature remains between 35 and 40 degrees.
