Aaron Mokoena, who captained Bafana Bafana at the historic 2010 FIFA World Cup, understands better than most the enormous pressure that comes with wearing the captainโ€™s armband on footballโ€™s biggest stage.

Speaking to Mamelodi Sundowns MagazineMokoena reflected on this historical period as he remains deeply moved by the unity of the nation.

โ€œWe have so many memories, but the one that stands out the most is riding in an open-top bus through the streets of Sandton to greet the South Africans before the tournament,โ€ he said.

โ€œUsually these parades are for celebrations, so we were reluctant at first, but looking back, it was the right decision.

โ€œThe country was united, inspired and fully supported us. It felt like we were part of something much bigger than football.โ€

โ€œThen there was the opening match against Mexico in Soccer City.

โ€œThe atmosphere was incredible โ€“ vuvuzelas, a packed stadium and the energy of the fans. Those moments still give me goosebumps.โ€
