Aaron Mokoena, who captained Bafana Bafana at the historic 2010 FIFA World Cup, understands better than most the enormous pressure that comes with wearing the captainโs armband on footballโs biggest stage.
Speaking to Mamelodi Sundowns MagazineMokoena reflected on this historical period as he remains deeply moved by the unity of the nation.
โWe have so many memories, but the one that stands out the most is riding in an open-top bus through the streets of Sandton to greet the South Africans before the tournament,โ he said.
โUsually these parades are for celebrations, so we were reluctant at first, but looking back, it was the right decision.
โThe country was united, inspired and fully supported us. It felt like we were part of something much bigger than football.โ
โThen there was the opening match against Mexico in Soccer City.
โThe atmosphere was incredible โ vuvuzelas, a packed stadium and the energy of the fans. Those moments still give me goosebumps.โ
