AMC’s iconic The Walking Dead franchise is gearing up for its big return this summer, but that alone is a reminder of one of fans’ biggest worries: what happens next? The Walking Dead: Dead City This July, the third season will be released, which promises completely different adventures for Maggie and Negan in Manhattan. After this, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season four introduces us to Daryl and Carol in Spain, and this will be the final season of their spin-off.
After nearly a year-long hiatus, the TWD Universe is almost back with 16 more exciting adventures in these two spin-offs, a true throwback to the good old days when the original series aired the same number of episodes. The question is, is this nostalgic return the beginning of the end for the franchise? It’s certainly possible, but no matter what the franchise’s long-term future looks like, it could mark the end of the 17-year-old series.
There are no confirmed TWD projects in development for 2027.
There are currently no officially confirmed TWD Universe projects for next year, meaning 2027 could be the first year since 2009 that there will be no Walking Dead shows airing new episodes. And it’s damn shocking from every angle.
Of the two spin-offs still on the air, these are Daryl Dixon it managed to maintain a yearly release strategy, meaning that – had it not ended this year – it would have returned with a potential fifth installment next fall. However, the upcoming fourth season will indeed be its last, and AMC has confirmed that it will premiere this fall, ending its four-year annual run. And in doing so, it could potentially end the entire franchise’s 17-year annual streak.

Now everything can change if Dead city will be renewed in the next few months, but since the series’ third season has yet to air, AMC may not be making any announcements about its future until it wraps its run – making the likelihood of a potential fourth season airing in 2027 lower than it should be (after all, Dead cityThe run was less than annual, with a two-year break between the first two seasons). What’s more, a number of industry insiders have stated that season three is expected to be the last, which has understandably left fans worried about the future of the TWD universe.
As for the potential for new TWD Universe spin-offs, it’s unlikely that any will hit theaters before the end of 2027. More stories from the Walking Dead universe has been in development limbo for three years (fans believed AMC had quietly canceled it as new spin-offs took shape), and while AMC’s Walking Dead universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple is hoping to create this long-awaited reunion spinoff, the logistics of it will likely make production impossible until late 2027.
San Diego Comic-Con could be the moment that changes everything
There’s one major event that could shake things up in the TWD universe: San Diego Comic-Con. Scott Gimple and other AMC creatives typically attend the annual event in Hall H to talk about upcoming projects in the world of The Walking Dead. With at least two of them still on the horizon, it’s fair to assume they’ll likely return to SDCC this year.
Comic-Con takes place a week before Dead city Season 3 will premiere on AMC and AMC+, so it would make sense for Gimple to promote it alongside stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan. Same thing with the fourth and final season. Daryl Dixon Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride are also expected to appear on the horizon. After all, this is the event where AMC announced the show’s impending end last year; it’s only fair that they get to promote the final season of the year.

Since the franchise doesn’t have an immediate confirmed future beyond this year, perhaps those associated with it will take the opportunity to officially confirm what’s coming next. This is the right place to confirm Dead citydestiny – we hope to renew it for a fourth season and keep the 17-year-old TWD Universe series alive for another year. If there is an early renewal, the production timeline could be similar to that of Season 3 (September-December), eventually allowing for a 2027 premiere.
Perhaps Gimple will also take the time to announce the future of Rick Grimes and plans for the future of the franchise. Daryl Dixon Season 4, rumors of a crossover series, and maybe even a new spin-off altogether. We can dream, we can hope, we can wait; we just hope there’s more TWD in 2027 and beyond.
