Ursa Major eaglet fell from tree live; Activist organization remains 'positive': everything is fine with it

One of the Great Bear’s famous eagles fell from her bald eagle family’s nest on Sunday, although an activist organization believes she is fine.

On the Friends of Big Bear Valley livestream, one of the eaglets, later identified as Sandy, could be seen flapping its wings as it stood on a branch near the nest around 11:24 a.m. At the same time, she lost her balance and fell onto a lower branch.

About a minute later, the eagle fell again, landing on an even lower branch.

At 11:30 a.m., Sandy, who appeared to be hanging upside down from a branch, fell again, this time out of view of the live camera.

CBS LA’s Friends of the Big Bear Valley said they remain confident Sandy is okay after the scare.

“Fortunately, we saw her fly and land on another tree from our surveillance camera,” the organization said in a statement. “Right now she’s probably hiding and coming to her senses.”

The organization confirmed that Sandy’s mother, Jackie, was on hand after the incident.

Jackie and Shadow greeted their two new family members at the beginning of April. They were later named Sandy and Lunathe first of which is named in honor of the late Friends of Big Bear Valley. Wildlife activist Sandy Steers.

No further details were immediately released.

A Friends of the Big Bear Valley blog posted Sunday morning indicated the eaglets may be just days away from their first flight. The organization reminded visitors to stay away from the habitat.

“We also remind everyone that it is illegal to be in the habitat during this sensitive time for our eagle family,” Friends of Big Bear Valley said.
