Penguins defenseman Tomas Galvas selected 54th overall

The Pittsburgh Penguins took a chance on a long-term project by drafting defenseman Tomas Galvas from White Tigre Liberec in the Czech Extraliga with the 54th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

Although Galvas has played a total of 35 games against senior men in one of Europeโ€™s top leagues, it is impossible to introduce him as a prospect without mentioning his physique.

At 5โ€™10โ€ there is very little precedent for a defender with such a small frame to be rated in the top 70 (60 in Stephen Ellisโ€™ final rankings). Lane Hutson comes to mind, but heโ€™s over ten pounds compared to Galvas and isnโ€™t exactly an NHL success story this early in his career.

Ignore his height and weight, which the Penguins were clearly willing to do, and Galvas is a great player with a good head on his shoulders.

Galvas is smart with the puck and has an excellent first pass that keeps him out of trouble when the pressure builds in his own zone.

His skating and stickhandling help him increase his possession on offense, where he likely has more potential than his modest Extraliga numbers (two goals, seven points) would suggest; Limited minutes have kept his numbers from jumping off the page, but that could change when he returns to Liberec next season.

Clear zone breaks are his biggest strength on defense, but heโ€™s also shown a willingness to actively defend against the rush, which would allow him to be a two-way option down the line if his physical development helps.

This maturation is the biggest question mark for a player who has a high level of passing and is confident with the puck. If he can add some muscle over the next few seasons, Galvas has an opportunity to become a pro guard in Pittsburgh.
