As the midfielder prepares to return to Montreal on Sunday night, he expects the entire team to step up its level of play.

โ€œItโ€™s not our standard to allow that many points,โ€ he told the media this week. โ€œOur standard is 17 points no matter who we play. We need to get back to that level starting this week.โ€

Beverett doesnโ€™t know when exactly he suffered the injury, but he was ejected in the second quarter of the home opener against the Toronto Argonauts. Watching from the bench the following week gave him a completely different perspective, one he didnโ€™t like.

โ€œIt was very frustrating. I havenโ€™t missed a game in five years and counting. Just watching from this perspective and from this angle was different for me. Coming back this week helps me appreciate the game of football.โ€

The Lakewood, N.J. native said stepping away from the field has given him a better appreciation of both the energy his unit brings and the areas that still need improvement.

โ€œWe know what type of defense we have. We just need to get back to playing dominant football and not give up too many points.โ€

Head coach Jason Maas offered a slightly different take on the defensive situation.

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t bother me,โ€ he said. โ€œAt the end of the day, itโ€™s all about scoring more points than your opponent, no matter what happens. Obviously, we have standards in our defense that we want to maintain every game. We donโ€™t say, โ€˜Hey, they should score these points per game.โ€™ Itโ€™s all about how we execute on defense.โ€

While Maas often emphasizes the โ€œnext man upโ€ mentality, he welcomes Beverettโ€™s return with open arms.

โ€œThis was his first missed game since Iโ€™ve been here. What I like about โ€˜Bevโ€™ is that he can influence the game in so many different ways,โ€ he said. โ€œHe also plays special teams for us. Heโ€™s played over 1,500 games for us over the last three years, so weโ€™re used to him being on the field and his presence. Weโ€™ll be excited to have him back.โ€

On Sunday, June 28, the Alouettes (2-1) will host the Ottawa Redblacks (0-2). The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm ET.
