A guest at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding gives an inside look at what happened during the couple’s emotional ceremony and stunning reception.
Jonathan Thomas, CEO of American Century Investments, said on the podcast “The Compound & Friends” that the ceremony was “very solemn and emotional” with vows that lasted about half an hour each.
“Travis said his vows first,” Thomas said. “He talked for probably 30 minutes. And I don’t want to invade his privacy, but I cried.”
He said Kelsey’s vulnerability set the tone for the room.
“He made himself incredibly vulnerable. I sat there and cried and tried to hold it in until I looked around and saw all these 300-pound men in the football business were crying too. And so I felt very comfortable letting it go.”
Thomas said Swift made her own vows afterward, equally lengthy and unmistakably her own.
“She also wrote her own vows,” he continued. “She spoke for probably 30 minutes… it was poetic. She’s a writer.”
The ceremony opened with a moment that momentarily stunned the crowd: Adam Sandler served as emcee, he recalls.
“He came down and everyone laughed and thought it was a joke at first, but he really did it. He probably spoke for 20 or 30 minutes, fluctuating between funny, very sincere, and sang a few things.”
Sandler’s message, Thomas said, centers on two themes.
“One of them is that in your typical vows the officiant says, ‘For richer or for poorer,’” Adam said, “you don’t have to worry about it.” And secondly, his key message was: kiss each other every day, morning, evening, after dinner, just kiss more often.”

Once the ceremony was over, Thomas said, the night changed dramatically.
“They opened (the venue), you kind of walked through this huge castle they built. And by the way, you’d never know you were in Madison Square Garden like they were. It was incredible.”
Behind the castle façade, he recalled, there was a reception filled with games, giveaways and a stage that quickly turned into a star-studded concert.
“And then on stage, first Taylor and Paul McCartney sang, and then Taylor and Stevie Nicks sang.”
Thomas described the rest of the night as a parade of legends.
“I have said all along that if anything happens in this building, the entertainment industry in the United States will disappear. They just went on stage and sang songs.”
At some point, Thomas found himself surrounded by icons.
“I was dancing with my wife, and without any exaggeration, on my left was Paul McCartney, in front of me was Brad Pitt, on this side was Cindy Crawford, and behind me was Brad Pitt. I mean, we’re just surrounded by legends.”
He said the couple planned the evening with an unusual intention: the ceremony was for them, and the reception for everyone else.
“They really tailored the second part (the reception) to their guests,” Thomas said. “I have never seen a wedding that was so designed to please the guests and provide them with a lot of fun. There is usually always a running theme about the bride and groom. For them, the ceremony was very much about them. As soon as you walked through this castle, everything was focused on the guests and they did everything they could to make sure everyone had a good time.”
Swift and Kelsey got married on July 3 at Madison Square Garden. The mystery surrounding the wedding preparations dissipated when, after they tied the knot, a marquee outside the Manhattan Arena announced, “GET MARRIED ONLY.”
