An 18-year-old man has been charged and remanded in custody for attempted murder of a person holding public authority after he seriously injured a police officer while refusing to comply on Monday in Marseille, Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessonnet said on Thursday, July 23. Three minors, ages 13 and 16, who were in the stolen vehicle, also face charges related to the case.
According to the prosecution, the police tried to conduct an investigation on Monday “motor vehicle due to lack of registration plates”. The driver refused to comply, and during his escape “forcibly” hit a police officer before losing control of the car. The four passengers then fled on foot before being arrested.
Ultimately, the investigation determined that the car was stolen. The 18-year-old driver, who already had a history of gun possession as a minor, was charged with counts of attempted murder of a person in authority, aggravated failure to comply, driving without a license, aggravated theft and concealment of aggravated theft. He was placed in a pre-trial detention center.
The three passengers, all minors, were charged with “aggravated failure to comply, aggravated eluding, aggravated burglary.” Two 16-year-old teenagers, one of whom is known for drug trafficking, and the other, in particular for acts of aggravated violence, were placed in a pre-trial detention center. The youngest, 13 years old, with no criminal record, was placed under judicial supervision, including placement in a closed educational center.
