Berlin – Smoking in Germany is becoming a luxury. More and more Germans are being forced to think twice about whether they can afford it. With a hole in the federal budget, smokers will have to pay even more taxes in the future than already planned. This means: according to current government plans, the price of a pack of cigarettes could rise to almost twelve euros by 2030!

According to the information, the reason for the change is the federal budget deficit. According to the report, government officials say the “modest increase” is not just about plugging budget holes: “The increase also protects public health and is consistent with the federal government’s goal of reducing smoking rates among youth and adults.”
In particular, the average price of a pack of cigarettes is expected to rise to €9.10 in 2027, to €9.91 in 2028, to €10.81 in 2029 and to €11.78 in 2030. An ever-increasing portion of the cost of a pack goes to the state: the tobacco tax increases from approximately 4 to 6.19 euros per pack.
