Eligible Canadians are scheduled to receive their first quarterly Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) payment on July 3, which will be the first tranche of the government’s new program.

The CGEB program, formerly known as the HST/GST credit, was announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney on January 26, 2026, to support Canadians struggling with the cost of living, especially food costs. The CGEB payment is not related to the HST/GST top-up payment issued in June.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), benefit amounts are recalculated each July based on income and family size from the previous year’s tax return. For example, information from a 2025 tax return determines the CGEB payment amount for the July 2026 to June 2027 pay period.

  • $679 if you are single
  • $890 if you are married or have a civil partner.
  • $234 for each eligible child under 19 years of age.

The CGEB payment will be 25 percent higher than the previous HST/GST credit, payable on Friday and through 2031.

Payments will be made quarterly, with the last payment of the year occurring on October 5, 2026.
