Tom Hanks’ upcoming baseball movie is ready to go into production.
Sony Pictures announced Wednesday that the film is gearing up for release. Returnee in theaters July 30, 2027. Hanks stars in the film, which Marielle Heller is directing from her own script, adapting Dave Eggers’ 2024 short story of the same name.
Returnee Hanks plays a pitching coach whose life changes dramatically after he is hit in the head by a hit ball while standing on the mound.
Playtone and Leah Holzer are producing the project in collaboration with Major League Baseball.
Returnee is set to hit theaters in late July, which falls at the typical midpoint of the MLB season as pennant races continue to heat up.
Hanks already has one classic baseball movie under his belt, having starred alongside Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O’Donnell in the beloved 1992 film. A league of their own. Hanks played manager Jimmy Dugan in director Penny Marshall’s 1940s ode to the All-American Women’s Professional Baseball League.
In the film, which also hit theaters in July, Hanks utters the line, “There’s no crying in baseball.” It was ranked #54 on AFI’s list of top movie quotes.
Heller last directed Amy Adams in 2024. Night bitch. Among her other directorial works Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can you ever forgive me? And A beautiful day in the neighborhoodin the latter, Hanks played the late Fred Rogers.
