The International Cricket Council (ICC) has set the end date for qualifying for the 2027 ODI World Cup as September 30, 2026. A total of 14 teams will take part in the World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia next year. This World Championship will take place from October 4 to November 21.
South Africa and Zimbabwe have gained direct qualification for the World Cup as they are the hosts. The format is as follows: 2 home teams will qualify directly and the next 8 teams will be decided based on ODI rankings. Excluding South Africa and Zimbabwe, the next top eight teams in the ODI rankings will qualify. The last four teams will have to go through the qualifying tournament.
8 teams qualified
South Africa, Zimbabwe, India, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England have qualified for the 2027 ODI World Cup. If Afghanistan and Bangladesh remain at eighth and ninth position in the ODI rankings till September 30, 2026, they will qualify for the World Cup. In such a situation, the two-time world champion West Indies will not be able to qualify directly and will have to overcome the difficulties of the qualifying tournament and try to qualify for the World Cup. To decide who will be among the last 4 teams, a qualifying stage among 36 teams began from 2024 itself.
The World Championship will be held in a new format
This time, the ODI World Cup will feature 14 teams. The Super Series will be played between the three lowest ranked teams that have qualified and will be played in a round-robin format. In this super series, the top team will take the lead and the remaining 2 teams will be eliminated.
After this, the 12 teams will be divided into two groups of 6-6 people. The top 3 teams in each group will qualify for the Super 7, and the fourth best team in both groups will be the last team to qualify for the Super 7. The four best teams from the Super-7 stage will meet in the semi-finals.
