Uruguayan footballer Bruno Betancore, champion with Penarol in the 2023 season and currently defending Deportivo Italiano, died at the age of 22 due to cardiopulmonary arrest.

The club announced this on social networks and confirmed the Uruguayan Union of Professional Footballers in a statement expressing condolences over the incident.

Upon hearing the news, several Uruguayan clubs mourned the death of the athlete who defended Everton in Chile in the 2024 season.

“Atlético Peñarol deeply regrets the death of Bruno Betancore, a player who played for our colors in the 2023 season as part of the Apertura tournament champion team that year,” Aurinegro said in a statement.

He also expressed his deepest condolences to his family, friends and Deportivo Italiano.

Betancore defended Penarol in 14 official matches, in which he scored four wins, three draws and seven defeats.

He made his debut on 25 March 2023 against Liverpool in the Apertura tournament and had a bye on 16 December of the same year against the same opponent in the Uruguay Championship final.

Atlético Cerro expressed “deep regret” over Betancore’s death and noted that he “knew how to wear and faithfully defend” the club’s colours.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, whom we accompany in this painful moment,” he said in another statement.

For its part, the Phoenix Sports Center recalled that the footballer was part of its training units and expressed its “most sincere condolences” to his family and loved ones.
