Former tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has questioned why the UK is experiencing such intense heat this summer.
The country has recently been experiencing one of the worst heat waves the country has faced in decades. Bouchard arrived on our shores and grabbed everyone’s attention as she became Wimbledon’s new pundit. However, on social media, the Canadian star, who lives in Miami, echoed the sentiments of the rest of the country, complaining that the heat was becoming too stifling.
Bouchard, who finished second in the women’s singles at SW19 in 2014, asked for theories about why the heat in London was so intense. “I know there’s been a lot of discussion lately about AC between the US and Europe, and some think we’ve probably talked about it enough,” Bouchard wrote.

“But I’m here to tell you that we have NOT been in the UK for less than 24 hours and I feel like I’m on an episode of Survivor. Last night I brushed my teeth, sweated profusely, slept without blankets and usually have a cold. Genuinely curious what the reason for this is. Who can enlighten me?
Most of the responses focused on the lack of air conditioning in the UK, while many others suggested that our homes are built to retain heat rather than release it.
There was a lot of buzz about Bouchard’s move to the BBC this summer. The glamorous 32-year-old turned heads at the 2014 Championships by reaching the women’s singles final at just 20 years old.

Speaking about her off-court appeal, Bouchard told YouTuber Valeria Lipovetskaya during a 2024 podcast episode: “Tennis, first of all, is a great sport for that side of sex appeal. We wear short skirts, we wear T-shirts. It’s nice to turn on the TV and watch this.
“I was able to get some great off-court marketing deals right away. I’ve been asked to appear in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition several times. Exploring this path was definitely on my to-do list. It’s definitely a part of me because I think it’s great.”
Bouchard, who retired from the sport in 2025, reached two Grand Slam semi-finals, including the Wimbledon final against Petra Kvitova. However, after this feat in 2014, she failed to make it past the quarterfinals of a major.

Her last appearance in the Wimbledon main draw took place in 2019. She also qualified for 2023 but lost in straight sets to Gret Minnen.
In 2019, the Canadian star spoke to the Telegraph about allegations that she had become more of a social media influencer than a tennis player. “I think everyone cares what people think of them, so to say, ‘I don’t care about them at all,’ would be a lie,” she said.
“Obviously I care about it, as does everyone else. I also try to take it as a compliment because it means you did something, stood up for something, evoked enough emotion for them to interact with you.”
