Samsung Unveils Flex Titanium Technology to Advance Foldable Displays – Samsung Newsroom UK

New display technology, powered by Samsung’s comprehensive innovative folding technology, improves durability and reduces the appearance of creases for a more refined folding experience.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today introduced new Flex Titanium technology for the next generation of foldable Galaxy devices. Built on innovation from seven generations of foldable devices and engineering expertise, the redesigned display features improvements in design and materials to deliver a more refined viewing experience, improved durability and reduced visibility of creases. Made possible by Samsung’s accumulated display know-how, Flex Titanium technology combines two titanium-based components—a titanium alloy film and a titanium plate—that work together to balance thinness, flexibility and strength in a foldable display design.

“Samsung’s strength in the foldable device category lies in combining user needs with our technologies that bring tangible benefits to everyday life,” said Sunghoon Moon, executive vice president and senior executive director of Mobile R&D – H/W, Samsung Electronics. “For the next generation of foldable Galaxy devices, Samsung is building on decades of experience bringing innovative displays to devices that enhance the user experience and deliver exceptional viewing experiences.”

Based on many years of experience in folding technology

Samsung has played a leading role in driving innovation in mobile displays and bringing them to consumers through mobile devices. This legacy includes the widespread adoption of AMOLED displays in 2007 and the evolution of displays into flexible form factors.

Innovative technologies can only reach their full potential and deliver meaningful user experiences through continuous improvement in the real world, and the foldable category is no exception. Samsung has listened closely to consumer feedback to create seven generations of foldable Galaxy devices. This gave the company a deep understanding of what users expect from this category: a larger, more immersive viewing experience with less noticeable creases—without compromising on durability and portability.

To meet these expectations, Samsung had to rethink the design of foldable displays, combining advances in technology, materials and engineering. The result is the latest milestone in foldable display innovation: Flex Titanium technology. By successfully integrating display innovation with device development, Samsung will continue to shape the direction of the mobile industry and deliver outstanding user experiences.

Flex Titanium: Next Level Viewing

To create a display that delivers an immersive viewing experience while maintaining its ability to withstand everyday use, Samsung took a new approach to structural design. This required a material strong enough to withstand external impacts, flexible enough to withstand repeated folding, and thin enough to fit into the device’s advanced design. Balancing all three was important to move foldable displays forward, and titanium was the right combination.

Titanium, known for its stability and strength, has been used in some of the most demanding applications, including satellite dishes and Mars rover wheels. While its strength makes titanium a reliable material, it also poses significant engineering challenges when used for a thin and flexible folding display design due to its rigidity. Based on its experience, Samsung has integrated titanium into two key components: titanium alloy film and titanium plate.

The titanium alloy film is the component that supports the display from the inside and sits underneath the OLED panel. Compared to polymer film, it provides 20 times greater mechanical rigidity. A precision rolling process makes the material exceptionally thin—about one-third the thickness of an average human hair—enabling a thinner display panel.

Beneath this is a durable titanium plate, a flexible structure that supports the display module from below. This provides a tighter connection to the display module by eliminating air gaps between the module and the adhesive on the wafer through advanced hole technology. This new design provides more stable support under the display when unfolded, while maintaining the flexibility needed for repeated folding.

Additionally, by integrating high-resolution architecture and next-generation organic materials, the new display delivers ultra-bright image resolution while reducing power consumption, significantly improving overall energy efficiency.

“By incorporating complex micro-patterned holes into the folding portion of the titanium plate, we have successfully achieved flexibility and durability,” said Kyung Jin Yoo, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Display Product Development Group, Samsung Display. “By combining high-resolution display architecture with new organic materials that maximize energy efficiency, we will further strengthen the competitiveness of the next generation of Galaxy foldable devices.”

Together, these advances create a durable foldable display that maximizes content immersion on a single screen and reduces the appearance of creases—all while maintaining its thinness. By balancing strength, flexibility and structural stability, Samsung continues to set the bar for foldable displays.

The new Flex Titanium technology will debut on the next generation of Samsung Galaxy foldable devices. More details will be provided on Galaxy Unpacked.
