Ghana’s Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz announced his resignation from his position this Sunday (5), a day after the Black Stars were eliminated by Colombia (1-0) at the 32-team 2026 World Cup.

“I leave this adventure proud of what we have achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of someone who has always wanted more,” the 73-year-old coach wrote on his Instagram account. He took charge of the Ghana national team in April last year.

Experienced coach Carlos Queiroz has already led other teams at the World Cup: Portugal in 2010 and Iran in 2018 and 2022.

He also had a disappointing spell in charge of Colombia from February 2019 to December 2020.

When he was hired three months ago, the Ghana Football Association did not specify the length of the contract beyond the World Cup.

After reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup as one of the top third-placed teams in the group stage (one win, one draw and one loss), the Black Stars were unable to repeat the feat of the 2010 World Cup when they reached the quarter-finals and ultimately suffered a traumatic loss to Uruguay on penalties.
