At least one potential Ja Morant contender is likely out of the running following the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor: “Sources say the Miami Heat were interested in Morant before the Giannis deal, but there’s not much expectation he’ll be traded.” Moreover, league sources expect Morant to be traded this week.”
The Heat could sign Andrew Wiggins (after he picks up his $30.1 million player option) and Davion Mitchell for Morant and match salaries, although they would be left with very little depth. And the Heat have had chances to trade Morant in the past but seem to have decided against it, so it’s hard to imagine what would change now.
A buyout or trade would make sense if the Giannis situation fell apart. However, that ship now appears to have sailed.
But it looks like Morant’s time in Memphis is finally coming to an end. His value has never been lower, but the two-time All-Star can still make a big impact on a team if he can stay healthy.
