Bordeaux (France)/Madrid (Spain) – Forest fires in Europe are increasingly out of control. In southwest France, a huge forest fire is threatening resort areas along the Atlantic coast. 8,700 hectares burned, the entire peninsula was evacuated, and 63,000 people were forced to flee the fires. There are 800 firefighters on duty and President Emmanuel Macron has applied for EU disaster aid.

The fire also got out of control in Spain. The government declared a “state of emergency” in two regions. The Interior Ministry announced on Friday evening that this now applies to the capital region of Madrid and the nearby province of Avila.
