Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel’s Masters of the Universe will stream on Prime Video this Wednesday, July 22.
This equates to a 47-day window from theater to streaming.
The Travis Knight-directed feature film, based on the popular 1980s toys and syndicated animated series, was in development for 18 years with Escape Artists and failed to explode at the box office, with production costs of $170 million, a domestic premiere of $29.4 million, a domestic finale of $64.6 million, and a worldwide finale of $113.3 million, receiving B CinemaScore and a critical rating of 67% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. This is despite the fact that the producers went above and beyond the previous feature-length version of the popular Mattel toy, released in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.
Masters Universe Prime Video’s stars Red, white and royal blue star Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam. He was separated from his space kingdom of Eternia for 15 years. But the Sword of Power leads him back to where there is unfinished business with Skeletor’s (Jared Leto) brutal reign. To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man at Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man—the most powerful man in the universe.
The screenplay was written by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee and Dave Callaham from a story by Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, Alex Litvak and Michael Finch. Producers are Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner and DeVon Franklin.
