Fireworks and festivals: Cancellations are on the rise
Faced with the risk of fire and heat exhaustion, local authorities have increased the number of cancellations for this weekend of July 14th. In the Loire-Atlantique, a prefectural decree prohibits all pyrotechnic shots until July 15, 2026. In Aveyron, the decree covers the period from 10 to 15 July. Rennes abandoned fireworks displays, and Parisian firefighters canceled their traditional balls.
Most of these municipal holidays for free : Their cancellation does not raise questions about refunds. The topic mainly concerns paid events (festivals, concerts, shows) for which the ticket is paid in advance. Some organizers also prefer postponement to outright cancellation: for example, the fireworks display in La Baule has been moved to August 15th.
The event was canceled by the organizer: a refund is required
If the organizer cancels, the contract between you is terminated: the paid service will not be provided. In this case, the organizer must refund the ticket priceincluding ticket fees. The DGCCRF considers it unfair that the provision excludes the reimbursement of these costs in the event of the organizer’s refusal.
The organizer can offer you loan or deferment for another date. You are not obligated to accept it: you can request a refund. Address your request to the organizer or point of sale that issued the ticket, and not to the third party reseller.
Rule in one sentence
In case of cancellation of the event, the ticket has the right to be refunded; if you choose not to go, this right disappears.
You give up due to fear of the heat: there is no return.
The situation changes if there is an event and you decide not to go because you are afraid of the heat or because of safety concerns for your health. Tickets for a show or entertainment event on a fixed date are not available. no right of withdrawalas provided for in Article L221-28 of the Consumer Code. In this case, the organizer is not obliged to reimburse you for expenses.
THAT additional costs such as transportation or accommodation are also not refundable, regardless of whether the event is canceled or you cancel, unless you have taken out cancellation insurance. Then check its conditions: the reasons are sometimes limited and the heat is not always on.
| Situation | Ticket returned | Things to Remember |
|---|---|---|
| Cancellation by the organizer | Yes | Ticket purchase fee included, credit or deferment not subject to tax |
| Rescheduled to another date | Your choice | You can request a refund rather than a deferment |
| You’re giving up on yourself | No | No right of withdrawal (Art. L221-28) |
| Transport, accommodation | No | Excluding cancellation insurance |
