Diane Kruger probably hates this phrase she constantly reads about herself: she is one of the few German women to make it in Hollywood. She never emphasized her German roots. Today she is 50 years old.

Katharina Wilhelm is an ARD correspondent based in Los Angeles.

Lower Saxony-born Diane Kruger, originally Diane Heidkruger, was for decades one of the few German actresses to be seen in major blockbusters, such as Troy opposite Orlando Bloom and Brad Pitt, in Quentin Tarantino’s hard-hitting films and in French arthouse cinema.

Her career began in her teens. She first worked as a model in Paris and then around the world. Things have gotten a little quieter around Diane Kruger in recent years. The reason for this: her daughter, who now receives the most attention.

Diane Kruger is considered one of the stars of German Hollywood and can be seen in many films. Today she turns 50.

Diane Kruger: Life between Hollywood and France

From Hollywood to the Federal Republic, many German actors want to build their careers in exactly the opposite way. But the secret to Diane Kruger’s success is that she has eluded Germany for now: “I live half in France, which is where I started making films – I’ve made more French films than American ones,” she explained to US late-night host Stephen Colbert in 2016.

From the catwalk to acting

At the age of 16, Diane Kruger moved from Algermissen near Hildesheim to Paris, where she initially worked as a model. Also under her real name: Diana Heidkruger. She has nothing good to say about her life as a model: “It was an instructive time,” she says about those years with restraint.

But, according to her own statement, she is looking for more depth and wants to express feelings in her work, so she takes acting lessons and is initially offered small roles in French films.

She improves her French and changes her name to Diane Kruger without the annoying German “ü”. This means it can better market itself internationally – and it’s paying off. In 2004, she landed the role of Helena in Wolfgang Petersen’s film Troy, alongside Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom.

Unaccented English in Inglourious Basterds

She owes her success in the US primarily to her English, which lacks a German accent. So she’s not committed to playing the German woman. Director Quentin Tarantino initially didn’t want to believe she was German when he cast her in Inglourious Basterds. She produces blockbusters in the US and independent films and comedies in France.

Living between continents, she now has – in addition to German – American citizenship. Her work is highly valued in France: in 2012 she joined the competition jury at the Cannes Film Festival. In her personal life, she is in a relationship with The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus. In 2018, the couple had a daughter.

Fatih Akin: “This was not our last film”

At Cannes she also met German director Fatih Akin, who later cast her as Katya in his film Out of Nothing, as he said at the Los Angeles premiere in 2017: “At some point I thought about Diane Kruger. I thought it would really fit. Then I sent her the script and she jumped on it immediately. Then I met her and thought: she is my “character”. Sometimes it feels like the actor and the director are two pieces of a puzzle. suit each other. This was not our last film.”

“Out of Nowhere”: a role with emotional depth

This is a dramatic role. The character Katya loses her husband and child as a result of an attack. Because her husband is Kurdish, the police initially take the investigation completely in the wrong direction. In a thriller, Kruger can show his full potential, not as a “pretty accessory”, but with full emotional depth.

In the thriller Out of Nothing, Kruger can reveal his full potential.

For this, she received the acting award for Best Actress at Cannes in 2017. In January 2018, Out of Nowhere won the Golden Globe for Best Non-English Language Film in Los Angeles.

One might say, a career leap due to a return to German roots. Then she said: “I would like to film in Germany again. It was a great experience. I’m German, I’ve been waiting a long time for a role in Germany and I hope I don’t have to wait 25 years again.”

In 2022, she will develop the limited series Marlene with Akin as producer and lead actress. Five chapters are dedicated to the iconic German actress Marlene Dietrich, but the project has been put on hold until further notice.

Since the actress’s family comes first, she works much less, but one of her latest projects is the television series “Swimming with Sharks.” We are talking about a hot topic: how do women get into leadership positions and how can they get the same jobs as men? In addition to Diane Kruger, the drama series also stars Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games).

In 2024, she will play three roles in David Cronenberg’s drama Shroud. It is about a grieving husband (Vincent Cassel) who cannot cope with the death of his wife.

In 2025, Fatih Akin’s box office hit Amrum celebrated its German premiere at the Hamburg Film Festival after a successful run at the Cannes Film Festival. It followed with good theatrical releases in France and the USA. In the film, Diane Kruger, as a Frisian compatriot, can be heard speaking Öömrang, the dialect of the island of Amrum.

Until October 4, the festival will screen 120 films from around the world. Stars including Diane Kruger, Detlev Bak and Laura Tonke attended the Amrum premiere on Saturday.

Film projects for 2026 in France, Spain and Germany

Kruger is currently in front of the camera in the French thriller The Decision. She worked with Mads Mikkelsen in Spain on the science fiction film AMI. In it, she embodies the voice of artificial intelligence that supports a lonely astronaut on an alien planet.

According to industry information, she has already filmed an international project with four female directors, including NDR crime film director Anne Zohra Berrashed. IN Each of Us tells the story of four women of different nationalities held in the only women’s concentration camp, Ravensbrück, during World War II. The film is expected to hit theaters this year.
