At the age of 16, Diane Kruger moved from Algermissen near Hildesheim to Paris, where she initially worked as a model. Also under her real name: Diana Heidkruger. She has nothing good to say about her life as a model: “It was an instructive time,” she says about those years with restraint.

She owes her success in the US primarily to her English, which lacks a German accent. So she’s not committed to playing the German woman. Director Quentin Tarantino initially didn’t want to believe she was German when he cast her in Inglourious Basterds. She produces blockbusters in the US and independent films and comedies in France.

At Cannes she also met German director Fatih Akin, who later cast her as Katya in his film Out of Nothing, as he said at the Los Angeles premiere in 2017: “At some point I thought about Diane Kruger. I thought it would really fit. Then I sent her the script and she jumped on it immediately. Then I met her and thought: she is my “character”.
