Sony will completely cease production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation games in January 2028. From now on, new releases will be available exclusively as digital download codes on both the PlayStation Store and brick-and-mortar retailers.
GTA 6 will be the first thorough test of this new reality. While the online response so far has been less than enthusiastic, players ultimately have no real choice.
The final step towards a purely digital console
An announcement from Sid Shuman, senior director at Sony Interactive Entertainment, seals the fate of the physical games market for the PlayStation platform. This change will affect all games released after the January 2028 deadline.
For collectors and supporters of physical media, this means the loss of a classic storage medium. According to Sony, the move is a response to changing consumer behavior among gamers, where digital purchases have long outpaced disc sales.
The logic of this step is purely economic. Data storage, logistics and warehousing cost money. This infrastructure will no longer be needed. Games that have already been released or games scheduled for release on disc before January 2028 are not affected by this ruling and will continue to be produced. This way, existing customers with large collections of disks will retain their access. The system will only change in future releases.
The role of trade is changing
Traditional retail will not die immediately as a result of this decision, but it will lose its most important unique advantage. Starting in 2028, retailers such as Amazon, GameStop in the US and electronics stores will only sell PS5 and potential PS6 games as gift cards and digital license codes.
This shifts pricing even further towards the PlayStation Store. This creates risks for consumers. The used game market will completely collapse for all games starting in 2028. In this case, sharing, lending or resale after completion will not be possible.
In a press release, Sony disguises the move as expanding choice for players, as players can still purchase the game in stores. This is a PR stunt. The choice between physical and digital is effectively eliminated. All that remains is to select a point of sale using the same digital code.
The discontinuation of disc production is a logical, albeit bitter, end for customers of the development that Sony initiated with the PS5 Digital Edition. For gamers, this means that from 2028 there will be no more content on disc, no physical resale value, and complete dependence on digital server infrastructure.
Anyone who values a physical bookshelf will have to rethink their approach within the next two years at the latest. PC made this transition over a decade ago. Now consoles are finally following suit.
