KFC Australia has officially confirmed it is rolling out its breakfast menu nationwide following a highly successful trial at Sydney Airport.

AM’s new range, dubbed “Morning Meals”, is already in development and will be available in several locations across the country.

Specific dates and locations for the launch of the new morning line have not yet been announced.

A KFC spokesperson told nine.com.au: “Following the positive response to the morning lunch trial at Sydney Airport, KFC continues to work with our franchise partners to bring morning lunch to more restaurants across the country, giving more fans the opportunity to start their day the KFC way.

“Keep an eye out for where the morning meal might pop up next because Aussies know there’s no wrong time to eat a full KFC chicken.”

The response to KFC’s Sydney Airport breakfast trial menu has been a hit, a spokesman said.

“The response has shown that there is a real appetite for KFC-inspired morning moments, with fans exploring new ways to enjoy their favorite chicken throughout the day,” they said.

The future of fast food breakfasts in Australia

Brand expert Amanda Stevens told nine.com.au that KFC had “obviously done their research” on fast food breakfasts.

“McDonald’s is a proof of concept,” she said.

“I think the airport trial made sense because it signaled to the market that they weren’t just launching breakfast. Consumers eat very differently.

“Three meals a day is very outdated. And people are busy and people are tired. If you doubt it, just ask them.

“So convenience is winning over consumers right now.”

Consumer psychologist and Thinkerbell founder Adam Ferrier told nine.com.au the timing of KFC’s breakfast menu made sense.

“Breakfast is the last great frontier for fast food. McCafé was incredibly successful for McDonald’s and was an Australian invention, GYG did brekkie quite successfully; those chains helped change the way consumers think about breakfast and fast food, so now KFC at breakfast doesn’t seem like a bad option.”

Not only will it not affect McDonald’s main competitor, he said, but it “could help McDonald’s by further legitimizing fast food as a breakfast option.”

“KFC is a very well-known brand with high demand and low price,” Ferrier continued.

“Extending the brand into breakfast makes sense as there’s no reason people would want to eat KFC for breakfast. It’s also partly driven by the protein movement, where chicken is perceived as a healthy, protein-rich option (fried dough around chicken, not so much!)”

Stevens said the inclusion of avocado on toast on KFC’s breakfast menu was likely “strategic”.

“So the avocado toast is really like a surprise item that can make or break it. It serves two purposes. First, if they can get it right, it’s a winning menu item.”

“But what it also does is do the heavy lifting in terms of getting people to go there. Like when McDonald’s released its salad range.”

Not to mention the low price, currently $3.95, further entices customers.

Fast food is the leader in cost of living

Fast food retailers including KFC and McDonald’s are now thriving despite cost of living pressures as customers look for fast, convenient and affordable food to fit their busy schedules.

“Life is pretty busy and hectic, so this is winning over consumers right now,” Stevens said.

Collins Food Limited, the parent company of KFC, reported a 7.6% increase in revenue to $1.24 billion in 2026. This followed their exit from Taco Bell, allowing them to streamline their portfolio and focus on expansion and profitability under KFC’s leadership.

McDonald’s reported a 3.8% increase in sales in the first quarter of 2026.

It’s not just KFC and McDonald’s that offer breakfast menu items to customers. Other fast food stores also offer a full breakfast menu and coffee at some locations until 10:30–11 a.m. each day.

Hungry Jacks also offers a full early morning menu including breakfast wraps, muffins and Turkish roll sandwiches, including the Mega BBQ Brekky Wrap and ones like the Turkish Bacon and Egg Brekky Roll, as well as coffee at Jack’s Cafe.

Subway also sells breakfast items including Bacon, Egg and Cheese Wraps, Ham, Egg and Cheese Wraps and Egg and Cheese Wraps. Some places also serve coffee.

Porto’s breakfast menu includes breakfast bowls with egg, rice, avocado and bacon, breakfast burgers, wraps and hash browns.

Guzmen y Gomez’s breakfast options include brekkie burritos, guac toast, cheese quesadillas and taco brekkies, along with barista-prepared coffee.

Night trading is key

In addition to expanding the new menu to several locations, KFC is also reportedly planning to extend its opening hours to take advantage of customer demand later in the evening.

Some KFC outlets in cities are now open until the early hours of the morning and even open 24 hours a day, as are several McDonald’s restaurants.

Ferrier explained that this was done to take advantage of customers’ increasingly fragmented schedules.

“Three meals a day are a thing of the past. People snack and consume food throughout the day – hence the longer opening hours and constantly changing menus throughout the day.

“Matching the type of dish to the event is a new type of headache for fast food retailers.”

A KFC spokesperson confirmed: “This is not a bad time for KFC and we know consumers’ eating habits are changing.

“Whether it’s fueling the morning rush, gathering friends and family over a bucket, or satisfying late-night cravings, we know our fans love finding new moments to enjoy their favorite chicken.

“That’s why we’re always looking for more ways to serve finger-licking delicious food whenever a craving strikes.”
