Manchester United could soon be ready to increase their transfer funds after it was revealed that former striker Mason Greenwood has signed a five-year contract with Roma. Greenwood is currently in Marseille, with many linking him to a move away from France, where the Serie A side are the leading candidate.

The 24-year-old has reportedly accepted a contract worth £3.9 million a year guaranteed, reports Calciomercato.com. Now Roma are going to make their first official offer to Marseille to sign the player, Sky Sport Italia reports.

The Italian outfit are reportedly preparing a €45m (£38.6m) offer for the Ligue 1 side, including bonuses and a sell-on clause. Marseille want €55m (£47.1m) but it is claimed the two clubs can find common ground.

Greenwood left Old Trafford for £26.6 million in 2024 after United concluded he could no longer remain at the club. The academy graduate was suspended by United when he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behavior in 2022.

The striker denied the charges, which were later dropped, but found himself sidelined at Old Trafford before leaving for Marseille after a season on loan at Getafe. United are understood to have included a sell-on clause in their agreement with Marseille which entitles them to receive up to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee.

Greenwood has no shortage of admirers, having scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions in the 2025/26 season. Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Fenerbahce and Juventus received interest.

French publication L’Equipe claims that the striker was asked by Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone. The Argentine needs reinforcements after already losing Antoine Griezmann and Nico Gonzalez, with Julian Alvarez’s departure still looking possible.

But Roma have a long-standing interest. In May they had already contacted Greenwood’s father, and the Marseille attacker was interested in the project.

However, according to reports from Turkey, two Fenerbahce representatives have traveled to France to “complete” Greenwood’s transfer.

Greenwood has previously said he wants to stay at the Stade Velodrome. Speaking after being named in the Ligue 1 team of the season, he said: “Overall this season has been difficult at times, especially in recent months, but individually I think I’ve had a good season.

“There are incredible players in this Team of the Year so it’s great to win this trophy. Ligue 1 is a great league. We play incredible matches and for me this is one of the best leagues I have ever played in. I hope I can stay.”
