Julian Nagelsmann has left his post as Germany coach following Paraguay’s shock World Cup exit in the round of 16, and talks are already underway with Jurgen Klopp about his replacement.

Germany lost 4-3 on penalties to the South American side and were eliminated from the tournament for the third time in a row after they failed to progress from the group stages of the competition in 2022 and 2018.

“The German Football Association expresses its sincere gratitude to Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023. He is characterized by a high level of commitment and exceptional ambition,” German Football Association President Bernd Neuendorf said in a statement.

In a statement, the DFB added that they will initiate negotiations with Klopp to become the new manager of the national team.

“With regard to the appointment of a new coach, the DFB management will now seek to negotiate with Jurgen Klopp. He has already indicated his general readiness to take up this position,” they said.

Nagelsmann succeeds Hansi Flick as Germany head coach in 2023 and becomes the country’s second-youngest coach at just 36 years old.

The former Bayern Munich coach led Germany to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 and extended his contract until Euro 2028 in January 2025.

Klopp, meanwhile, has not held a managerial role since leaving Liverpool in 2024. In January 2025, he was appointed head of football at Red Bull and was a World Cup analyst for Magenta TV.

“I understand that when people talk about the national coach, my name is mentioned. But now is not the right time to talk about it, especially with me,” he said on Magenta TV after Germany’s elimination from the World Cup.

“I have a job that I really enjoy. And, as far as I know, this is not a part-time job. The fact is that Germany were eliminated today and now is not the time to think about Jurgen Klopp’s future.”
