Many parts of the country have been facing a drought-like situation for a long time, but now the monsoon is finally becoming active. According to meteorologists, BSISO near the equator and LPS, that is, a low pressure system, have become active in the Bay of Bengal. Due to the meeting of these two weather systems, good rainfall is expected in North, East and Central India between July 20 and July 30.

There are two main weather modes currently in development…

  • First- The Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation (BSIOS) near the equator has entered a positive stage.
  • Second – Low pressure systems associated with Rossby waves are intensifying in the Bay of Bengal. Due to the meeting of these two, the speed of the monsoon increases. Humidity increases towards North India.

Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand will experience heavy rainfall from Saturday, according to the meteorological department and private agencies. By Sunday-Monday, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana and Eastern Rajasthan will also come under his control.

  • Uttarakhand: 300-500 mm
  • Uttar Pradesh: 200-350 mm
  • Himachal Pradesh and Jammu: 150-300 mm

This rain will be a relief for North India this season, but it will also increase the danger in the hilly areas. Incidents such as landslides, clouds and floods may occur in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand this week and next. People traveling are advised to be careful.

north-south divide

Nowadays the difference between North and South is clearly visible in India. According to the ECMWF model, Northern and Eastern India will receive good rainfall during July 20-27, while Western and Southern India will remain weak. States like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka are likely to receive below average rainfall this week. As a result, the impact of drought in these areas may further intensify.

India’s economy and agriculture are largely dependent on the monsoon. Crops in Kharif suffered due to lack of rains in June-July. Farmers may get relief from such rapid water withdrawal now, but there is also a possibility of floods and waterlogging due to sudden heavy rains.

Experts say that if BSISO and LPS remain strong, then even by the first week of August, South India and the west coast may see some improvement.

Cautions and Tips

  • People traveling in hilly states should constantly check the weather forecast.
  • There will be a danger of flooding of low-lying areas and river overflows.
  • Farmers should take care to drain water from fields after heavy rains.

The end of the monsoon is good news for North and East India, but inequality still persists across the country. The weather of the next 10-15 days will determine the overall monsoon situation in the country.
