Has the numbers game changed regarding delimitation and women's reservation? Preparing to re-introduce the bill during the rainy season

The central government is preparing to reintroduce the Women’s Reservation and Delimitation Bill during the monsoon season. The government is also discussing this issue with all political parties. Meanwhile, Supriya Sule’s hint about the Delimitation Bill has made the numbers game in Parliament more interesting. The NCP may consider supporting Sharadchandra Pawar with the condition of increasing the number of seats and discussing a cap of 50 per cent reservation. The government is also keeping an eye on MPs from JMM, AAP and NC, but the main key to this game lies in the hands of the DMK.

With the departure of TMC and Shiv Sena MPs in the Lok Sabha, the NDA now has 318 MPs. A two-thirds majority requires 360 votes. This means the government faces a challenge of gaining 42 extra votes. However, when voting on the bill was held in the last session, the YSRCP voted in favor of the bill and after adding this requirement, the requirement of 38 votes remains.

Lok Sabha numbers game
The total number is 540 people, three places are still vacant.
Two-thirds majority – 360
The NDA currently has 322 votes.
The government needs 38 additional votes

Now the government is looking at many deputies from the opposition camp. 37 MPs from Samajwadi Party, 4 MPs from RJD and 8 MPs from NCP Sharadchandra Pawar. According to sources, the government is also in touch with three MPs from JMM and two from NC. The game of numbers in parliament is such that every deputy is registered. In addition to gathering support, the government is also exploring the option of abstaining from voting.

The eight MPs from Sharad Pawar’s party are an important factor in all this math. If all states agree on the formula for increasing seats by 50 per cent, then the possibility of Sharadchandra Pawar’s NCP changing its position cannot be ruled out. If the government includes 8 deputies, then the number of supporters of the bill introduced by the government will become 330. But 30 votes will still be required, which means that the mathematics is not yet completed. DMK FACTOR starts here.

Lok Sabha – 22 members.
Rajya Sabha – 8 MPs
Total – 30 deputies

The DMK has 22 MPs in the Lok Sabha. If the DMK votes for the government, its tally will reach 352. This means that it is only 8 votes away from a majority of 360 votes. And if the DMK abstains instead of supporting, the number of MPs present in the House will decrease and the majority figure will also decrease. That is, whether the MQM supports him or keeps his distance, his decision is important in both situations. This is why it is said that the key to demarcation still lies in the hands of the MQM.

Government numbers game in Rajya Sabha
Two-thirds majority – 164
The government has – 155
After by-elections in Bengal – 158
We need the support of 6 deputies.
OR ABSTAIN 12 MPS

The numbers game being played by the government in the Rajya Sabha seems to be easier than in the Lok Sabha. After the by-elections for the three seats in Bengal, the government’s strength will be 158. A two-thirds majority will require the support of just 6 MPs. The DMK has 8 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. This also means that whether the MQM supports or abstains, the government’s job could become easier.
