Summer weather in RLP: hot thunderstorms expected on Tuesday

It is still hot in Rhineland-Palatinate, and no real cooling is in sight yet.

There will be plenty of sunshine initially on Tuesday, but as the day progresses, severe thunderstorms could develop across the center of the country – with heavy rain and squalls. Minor flooding and full basements are also possible, says SWR weather expert Claudia Kleinert. Maximum values reach 30–35 degrees.

The situation remains fluid, with a few showers expected Wednesday, but Thursday will be dry, Kleinert said. There may be frequent thunderstorms on Friday.

Forest fire risk remains high

Due to the ongoing heat wave, the risk of forest fires remains high in parts of Rhineland-Palatinate. Therefore, DWD advises you to be especially careful in the woods. Open flames and discarded cigarettes should be avoided at all costs. There were many fires over the weekend, and a section of forest near Krewe in the Bernkastel-Wittlich region also caught fire. According to the fire service, for reasons that are still unclear, a forest with an area of about 7,500 square meters burned down.

Kinheim

A piece of forest was burning above Kinheim. Firefighters had a hard time putting out the fire.

Forest fire near Kienheim an der Mosel: was it arson?

After a forest fire near Kienheim, police began investigating the cause. At the end of June, two large forest fires had already occurred between Kienheim and Kröwe.

Falling Rhine levels could affect shipping

Due to the ongoing drought, water levels in the Rhine may continue to fall. While cargo ships can adapt their load to the low tide, this becomes more difficult for cabin ships.

The Rhine Waterways and Shipping Authority estimates that hotel ships in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley may have to limit their travel or change their route in the next one to two weeks. Although the Rhine remains generally navigable for freight, many ships can now only travel with significantly less cargo due to low water levels.
