Samu Costa is a recovering midfielder who has physical brilliance and is constantly improving in the finishing area. Originally from Aveiro, born on November 27, 2000 and left-footed, he is today one of the biggest surprises in the Portugal squad for the 2026 World Cup, having enjoyed the best season of his career in Mallorca.
Route
Samu started at Beira Mare and Gafaña, moved to Palmeiras, and in 2016 moved to Braga’s youth team. He came through Braga’s youth teams, but only played one game for the first team: 45 minutes against Porto on 25 July 2020. That same year he moved to Almeria in Spain on loan and then permanently, making 40 appearances in his first season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. On Monday he again made 40 appearances and provided three assists to help Almeria gain promotion to La Liga. In 2023, he moved to Mallorca, where he scored a goal and provided an assist in 39 matches in the 2023/2024 season.
This season (2025/2026), Samu Costa has seven goals and two assists in 35 appearances for Mallorca, becoming the club’s second top scorer behind only Vedat Muriqi. He is a natural ball catcher who uses his physical size (1.85m, 78kg) to make a statement in the midfield, whether as a double pivot or a triple.
Portuguese team
His first match for Selesane A came on 4 June 2019 for the youth teams. He has 22 caps for the national team at all levels, scoring 2 goals and playing 1,177 minutes. On 19 May 2026, he was called up by Roberto Martinez for the 2026 World Championship, winning the race from João Palinha after the best season of his career. He has already represented Portugal at youth levels, including at Euro 2023 under-21s, in the same squad as João Neves, Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceiço.
