John Shmilek: The Giants have four rookies who could make an impact on the team fairly quickly this year. First-round picks Francis Mauigoa and Arwell Reese are likely to start in Week 1. Mauigoa will slot in at right guard and should provide the type of beating that John Harbaugh wants from his linemen. Reese will likely start next to Tremaine Edmunds, using his length and strength against the run on early downs, his wingspan and athleticism in coverage, while also contributing as a blitzer or edge rusher. Both have the talent to influence players very quickly.
Second-round pick Colton Hood will compete for playing time at outside cornerback this summer with Greg Newsome II and Deonte Banks. He wants to pressure receivers and be physical near the line of scrimmage. Third-round pick Malachi Fields will also compete for playing time at outside receiver. At 6-4 1/2 and 217 pounds, he is the team’s top receiver and should be able to dominate the field. He’s already made some incredible catches during spring training, some with one hand.
There’s a chance sixth-round pick Jack Kelly, JC Davis and Bobby Jamison-Travis could also contribute. Jamison-Travis has the best chance as a non-special teams player as he is an older player (25) and has demonstrated the ability to stop the run in college. The Giants will hold an open defensive tackle competition this summer to help fill out the depth chart.
I also want to highlight one undrafted free agent: kicker Dominic Zwada. He’s been more consistent throughout the spring and has a big leg that should allow him to kick deeper than 60 yards. He will compete with Ben Sauls for this position.
