Sure, it was another warm night, but not a tropical night anywhere in the UK. A tropical night is when the temperature does not drop below 20°C all night.
But last night it wasn’t far. At Heathrow in London and Shoebury the temperature did not drop below 19.5C all night, at Kenley in Surrey below 19.4C.
It was more refreshing elsewhere.
In Aboyne, which had Scotland’s highest temperature of 29C yesterday, it dropped to 9.2C, while in Cardiff Bute Park, where it hit 31.2C yesterday, temperatures dropped to 14.9C overnight.
Of course, these temperature readings are taken at Met Office regulated sites and are not an indication of the temperature in your home or bedroom, which is often designed to retain heat. The next few days will see even more heat buildup for many people.
Tropical nights were a feature of the late June heat wave, when heat peaks were more intense and the air more humid. The new June minimum was set at 23.5C in Cardiff Bute Park.
A tropical night could set in tonight, with London and the Home Counties again the most likely locations.
As easterly winds pick up on Friday and into the weekend, the worst of the heat will move a little further west into central southern England.
