D’Arcy Short scored an unbeaten 92 as Gloucestershire recorded a comprehensive 57-run Vitality Blast victory over Surrey in a one-sided Cross Group match at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol. The 2024 champions scored 191 for five after losing the toss, with opener Short scoring 56 balls and hitting 8 fours and 4 sixes. Jack Taylor contributed 40 runs for the fourth wicket of 84 with the 35-year-old Australian as Surrey’s bowlers struggled to bowl with any consistency on a bright, windy evening. In response, Surrey were bowled out for just 134, with 25-year-old seamer James Hayes marking his Blast debut on loan from Nottinghamshire with three for 23 as only Dan Lawrence, who scored 38, and Chris Jordan (27) offered strong resistance. Gloucestershire were able to build on a fruitful initial six-over powerplay which saw them score 67 for one. Dawid Malan impressed, scoring 28 off 19 balls in a first stand of 46 in 4.4 overs with Short taking 17 from the sixth bowled by Chris Jordan, including 2 sixes. Miles Hammond and Liam Scott were beaten cheaply by Dan Lawrence and Tom Lawes respectively, but Taylor hit his first ball off Lawes for four and added a further six and two boundaries in a 26-ball encounter. Short scored a 33-ball half-century, taking advantage of Surrey’s inconsistent bowling on a pitch faster than Bristol’s usual surfaces. The visitors were forced to field an extra fielder in the 19th round after running out of time. Kamran Dharilwal had just caught Sean Abbott off the ball and sent the free-kick home for six. It turned out to be his only successful over, but Short, who offered Chris Jordan one difficult chance to catch and bowl for 49, otherwise remained focused until the end of the innings to ensure his team had a competitive result. Surrey’s response got off to a bad start when Laurie Evans was caught behind Scott in the second round for an attempted ramp shot. Jason Roy quickly responded with a straight six from Matt Taylor but fell on the next delivery, missing his shot to deep square, leaving his side 14 for two. Hayes made 16 off his first over, but Marchand de Lange quickly removed Josh Philippe and at the end of the powerplay Surrey were 48 for three. An unflappable Hayes was clearly thrilled to take his first wicket for his new county, the Ollie Pope Trophy, who made 20 when he overcame an attempted leg shot and was caught at cover, with Surrey in deep trouble at 53 for four in the 8th over. Tom Curran was bowled by left-arm spinner Graham van Buuren as Gloucestershire taught their opponents a lesson in line and length before Hayes struck again, Lawes catching and hitting another top edge to make the score 59 for six. Abbott was stumped, pulled his back foot too far, reaching forward towards Van Buuren, and at 62 for seven the home side found themselves in a complete stranglehold. Despite some aggressive shots from Lawrence and Jordan, they never looked like they had recovered, and when Lawrence lost to Scott by 110, any doubt about the outcome was erased. Hayes took his third wicket in the final and Gloucestershire could boast of a superb team performance.
