Welcome to our live coverage of US politics and the conflict in the Middle East.
The United States struck Iran and Tehran retaliated against American allies in the Persian Gulf on Thursday as the adversaries battled over the vital Strait of Hormuz in a renewed war in the Middle East, despite a Pakistani mediator’s call to resume talks.
The strikes were carried out to “further reduce Iran’s military capabilities,” US Central Command said in a statement on X.
Iran said it struck radar systems, air defense systems and fuel storage facilities at Ali al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait, as well as US military installations at Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain. However, both Bahrain and Kuwait accused the Islamic Republic of attacks on civilian targets.
Meanwhile, a giant billboard appeared in central Tehran depicting Trump lying dead in open coffins.
The stand, installed in Islamic Revolution Square in the Iranian capital, features the words “We Kill Trump” in English along with a provocative image. Another billboard shows a burning White House with coffins draped in an American flag beneath images of the president, first lady Melania Trump and each of Donald Trump’s five children – sons Don Jr., Eric and Barron, and daughters Ivanka and Tiffany.
It came just days after mourners at the funerals of senior Iranian figures were filmed chanting for the deaths of Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Senator Lindsey Graham.
