Tom Holland told “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon on Monday night that the athlete ignored his Instagram private message to Norwegian soccer star Erling Haaland, joking: “I never thought I’d be talking about this on live television.”
“Yeah, yeah (I texted him),” Holland admitted. “And I’ll tell you this: this is exactly the kind of humiliating experience that is important for actors. You know, you say, “I’ll text him, I’ll invite him to dinner.”
Holland said he “received no answer, no excuse, no ‘I’m busy tonight, I’m playing football,’ no.” The Spider-Man and Odyssey star further noted that he messaged Haaland after seeing him in person at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco in June.
“I watched Lewis (Hamilton) race and I saw (Haaland),” Holland told Fallon. “He was (in) the hotel room across from me and I just thought I’d take a picture. Send him a message.”
“I never thought I’d be talking about this on air, but here we are,” he jokingly noted. You can watch Holland’s full conversation with Fallon on The Tonight Show in the video below.
While Fallon suggested Holland could benefit from reaching out to Haaland again, the Spider-Man actor joked that he doesn’t think the soccer star will say yes after England, Holland’s favorite soccer team, recently beat Norway to reach the semi-finals of this year’s World Cup.
“I don’t think he would have dinner with me after what happened the other day,” Holland said, to which Fallon responded, “Yes. He’s probably in a little pain.” Holland went on to say that he is still a fan of Haaland, calling him “incredible” and an “absolute legend.”
In a recent interview with Norwegian talk show A-laget, Haaland acknowledged his unintentional diss towards Holland, calling it “embarrassing.”
“I don’t really watch films, so I have no idea who people are,” the Norwegian footballer explained. “One person asked if we could go out to dinner, but I had never seen him, so I didn’t answer. I didn’t want to answer to an unknown person.”
