The Price Behind Taylor Swift's Madison Square Garden Wedding Party

New York

It’s a brutal summer for anyone wanting to know details about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s upcoming wedding. But one thing is for sure: if the wedding does take place at Madison Square Garden, the newly minted billionaire and three-time NFL champion will be able to afford to pull out all the stops.

Here’s what we know so far: Sources told CNN on Tuesday that the Garden will host two union-related events this week: a rehearsal on Thursday night and a larger celebration for 1,000 people the next day. Reporters confirmed there was a street permit in the area. Is Stevie Nicks rumored to be performing?

Known as “the most famous arena in the world,” MSG could hold double meaning for the couple.

“It’s significant that this venue is in a city where she has a home, and since it’s a venue that caters to both music and sports, (it) was perfect for their union,” Tracy Taylor Ward, a luxury wedding designer, told CNN.

But it’s no coincidence to get married in an arena in the bustling city center. Regardless of whether the wedding takes place at the Garden, it highlights the star power and deep pockets of the couple.

One luxury wedding planner, who spoke on condition of anonymity citing her clientele’s expectations of privacy, estimated that a luxury wedding at the Garden could cost between $15 million and $20 million. Another luxury wedding planner, Jason Rea, put the figure at “$10 million.”

Here’s what it takes to get married in the arena.

Every couple knows that the biggest wedding expense is the venue (an average of $12,900 in 2026 for us mortals, according to The Knot). The price increases significantly at the site, where NBA championship seats were just posted for $220,000.

Rea estimates site costs could run into the millions, including the days it takes to load and unload decor and materials. TMZ reported that booking MSG costs $1 million per night.

CNN has reached out to Madison Square Garden to confirm rental costs and labor policies.

Ira Levy said he handled lighting and sound for weddings for high-profile clients, including the Ambani family in India and Ivanka Trump. At a venue like Madison Square Garden, lighting costs can start at $650,000 per event and go up to “almost a million dollars,” Levy said.

By comparison, lighting costs for large weddings in luxury tents typically range from $150,000 to $300,000 for the entire event, he said.

An anonymous wedding planner said that while they have seen people spend up to $500,000 on flowers and decor, Swift could easily earn $1 million or more, depending on the size of the arena.

And then there are the people behind the scenes.

It’s a production that Swift has handled well since the Eras Tour, from the stagehands to the riggers who are responsible for hanging the equipment from the ceilings. It’s already expensive, but in Madison Square Garden, most of that workforce is unionized. This means costs are higher than in many other parts of the US.

The venue has partnerships with unions, including the International Alliance of Stagehands Local One, which represents a team of stagehands.

Another huge expense will be the safety of not only the couple, but also high-ranking guests.

There are also bathrooms, and it’s hard to imagine A-list celebrities lining up at the existing stalls. It’s entirely possible for Swift and Kelsey to “create their own bathrooms or build new walls inside them,” Ward said.

Nobody imagines the couple getting married in front of the stadium stands and under the Knicks banners. One New York City police officer spoke for many when he expressed his doubts to CNN outside the Garden: “She’s a charming girl… She wouldn’t get married here.”

“(MSG) looks cold and hard and is the exact opposite of what you think of when you think of romance and weddings,” Ward said. But Swift “I’m used to building stadiums from scratch and renting out stadiums for a few days.”

Instead, the couple will likely treat it like a canvas.

Ward envisions a space within a space, not unlike the custom tents and custom designs now popular at luxury weddings (it took five days to assemble one tent and recreate a Greek Orthodox church, Vogue reports).

According to a Vogue article about the trend, custom-built tents can cost up to $1 million. And that includes non-Taylor Swift weddings.

Taylor loves her Easter eggs, and there are rumors that Madison Square Garden is just a bold ploy to divert fans’ (and media’s) attention away from where her real wedding will be.

At face value, $10 million in rent is an exorbitant fee. for the trick. But for someone worth $2.1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, $10 million is less than 1%. her net worth.

For someone like Swift, paying for a multimillion-dollar wedding is just another champagne problem.
