Arte will take over the German premiere of the New Zealand six-part series After the Party in 2023. The crime drama by Robin Malcolm (“Outpost”, “Harrow”) will appear in the channel’s library on July 10. There is no live broadcast date at this time.

The series begins with an unpleasant reunion for main character Penny Wilding (Malcolm): after a five-year absence, her ex-husband Phil McKenzie (Peter Mullan) suddenly reappears in Wellington to visit his daughter Grace (Tara Canton) and grandson Walt – as if nothing had happened!

One night of partying changes everything

But what exactly happened? There are very different truths and opinions on this matter. The second level comes into play. The events that took place during and after the drunken and momentous party are only gradually illuminated and clarified.

That evening changed everything for Penny: the teacher caught Phil in an understandable situation with drunken teenager Ollie (Ian Blackburn). The shocked wife and teacher confronted her husband in front of the guests. But he branded her a drunk and nipped serious allegations in the bud, having previously been considered a popular sports coach and devoted family man.

Even after all these years, Penny is doing everything she can to stop the brutal criminal. At first, she remains a lone fighter. Because in their environment there is a toxic silence to maintain appearances, which protects the criminal and eats the victims inside. In her fight for justice, Penny faces far-reaching consequences for her personal life.

This is why there is no second season

Other roles include Elsa Carrada, Dean O’Gorman, Catherine Wilkin, Tanya Heck and Peter Hambleton. Malcolm created the series with writer Dianne Taylor. Sam Shore, Martha Hardy-Ward and Emily Perkins were also part of the writing team for the Lingo Pictures and Luminous Beast production. Peter Salmon sat in the director’s chair.

For her performance, Malcolm was awarded Best Actress at France’s Series Mania 2024. After the Party was also nominated in the Best International Film category at the 2025 BAFTA TV Awards. Despite its international success, there won’t be a second season: “We somehow feel like the work is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do,” Malcolm told Australian online magazine TV Tonight. Therefore, she considers continuation unnecessary.
