The German Football Association (DFB) will soon publish the schedule for the third league. The 2026/27 season starts on August 7.
Third League schedule 2026/27: publication imminent
The publication of the 3rd League schedule is imminent! The DFB will announce the new game plan from 9 to 16 July. The association informed us about this in June. According to our information, the game plan will most likely be published this week. The new season starts parallel to the Second Bundesliga on August 7. A week later, before the break in the German Cup, the second match day will take place. The first round will involve 13 of the 18 third division teams eligible to participate in the DFB Cup. A new record in the history of the third division.
English Language Weeks in September and October
The first weeks of English take place in September and October. There will be three matchdays between 11 and 20 September before the start of the three-week international break in September, during which the third division will also take a break. Even after a long international break, we continue the English language week. The second international break will take place in November. The last gaming day of the year will take place from December 18 to 20.
No games on Easter or the first weekend in May.
League Three returns from the winter break on January 15. The first English week of the new year will be played before the international break at the end of March. The international pause will continue through the Easter weekend. Since there will be no games in Germany’s first three divisions over the weekend of 1 May, the 35th matchday of the third division will be played on the Tuesdays and Wednesdays before the first weekend in May. The season finale will take place on May 22, 2027.

Who opens the 3rd league?
Let’s go back to the start of the season: We are looking forward to seeing who will play the first game of the 3rd League this season. In the last two years, TSV 1860 Munich took part in the opening game. This is no longer possible after the forced departure this year. Until now, rumors have focused on the participation of Fortuna Dusseldorf, which was relegated to the second division. Direct duel in NRW is possible. In total, eight of the 20 third division teams represent Germany’s most populous state.
If Fortuna Düsseldorf does open the third division season with a home game, North Rhine-Westphalia will have a double package of starting games, just like last year. Last year, the opening matches of the second and third division between Schalke 04 and Hertha, as well as Rot-Weiss Essen and 1860 Munich, overlapped. Bochum opens the 2nd Bundesliga this season with a home match against Berlin. In the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, the third league is well received by fans. About three-quarters of season ticket holders pledge allegiance to Fortuna.
