Switzerland have reason to be confident that they can put an end to this scandal at the knockout stage.

This is the first time they have faced an African team in the knockout stages and they have won both of their previous two World Cup games against the continent, winning 2-0 against Togo in 2006 and 1-0 against Cameroon four years ago.

In addition, Algeria has a very poor record in dealing with European opposition. They haven’t won any of their last nine World Cup games against teams from Europe, with four draws and five defeats.

Their only win was in their first World Cup game in 1982, when they beat Germany 2-1. But they came very close to another win in their last game, with Austria equalizing in the 96th minute for a 3–3 draw.
