Gotham FC, based in New York, was formerly the Sky Blue, where Kerr set numerous scoring records over three seasons from 2015 to 2017.

“I’m incredibly excited to be returning to Gotham and to this city,” Kerr said.

“This club has been an important part of my journey, and to come back to this moment with everything Gotham has built is truly special.

“The ambition here is clear and I look forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create new history.”

Kerr, signed until the end of the 2030 season, remains the NWSL’s all-time leading scorer despite leaving the league in 2020.

“Sam is one of the defining players of his generation and a game-changing talent who consistently performs at the highest levels of world soccer,” said Gotham President of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West.

“Sam’s return to Gotham is a significant moment for our club, and we are very excited about it.”

The striker won’t be able to make her debut for Gotham until the transfer window opens on July 14, when the club faces the Washington Spirit the next day.

In 2018, while playing for Chicago Fire against Sky Blue, Kerr hinted at problems at her former club, saying “the girls deserve better” in a post-match interview with The Equalizer.

Kerr, 32, left Chelsea after more than six years during which she scored 116 goals and became the club’s all-time top scorer.

She won five WSL titles, three FA Cups and three League Cups.

She has won numerous individual honors in England and was runner-up in the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player in 2023 after finishing third in the previous two seasons.

Her time in Europe was marked by a serious knee injury that kept her out from January 2024 until the end of 2025.
