Leandro Barreiro will miss Benfica’s trip to St Gallen in the first leg of the Europa League second qualifying round on Thursday after missing training on Wednesday with a respiratory infection. According to Glorioso 1904, he is not in Marco Silva’s team.
The 26-year-old Luxembourg international did not train at Benfica’s campus, meaning he will miss the club’s first official match of the new season in a belated setback for the staff.
Marco Silva still had 28 players on the field and was helped by Bruma’s return to full training after physical problems sidelined him recently.
Joshua Winder, who has a left knee injury, and Jayden Umeh, who is recovering from a serious right thigh muscle injury, are also unavailable.
Gianluca Prestianni and Gabriel Indio trained with the team but are not cleared to take part, the Argentine is serving a FIFA ban and the Brazilian defender is not registered for the competition.
Silva is due to hold a pre-match press conference on Wednesday at 19:00, where he is expected to discuss the state of the team and its selection for the first leg of the Europa League.
