Heat in Jammu and Kashmir to subside as monsoon begins today: MeT director

Srinagar, June 30: After days of intense heat in Kashmir, the weather will become wetter and intermittent rainfall is expected in Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days, Srinagar Meteorological Center Director Mukhtar Ahmad said on Monday.

Ahmad said rising temperatures were expected in the department’s previous forecasts.

“As already expected, there is a possibility of an increase in temperature from the 27th onwards. Severe heat has prevailed for the last three to four days, especially in the Kashmir valley,” he said.

Heat wave was recorded at several stations, especially Srinagar, Qazigund and Kukernag, on Sunday, Ahmad said.

“Today is also expected to continue the heat until midday. After that, there may be a chance of scattered rain in some areas, which may bring some relief,” he said.

The Met Office director said another spell of rain was likely to occur late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

“Further spell of rainfall is likely late evening and around tomorrow morning, especially in the Jammu region where heavy showers may occur. Similarly, in the Kashmir valley, some areas may experience light rain from time to time with the possibility of a few heavy showers,” Ahmad said.

He said the rainy weather is expected to continue for several more days.

“As already forecast, rainy weather is expected in the coming days. From July 2 to July 6, short showers are likely, especially at night and early morning, as well as in the afternoon and evening,” he said.

Ahmad said Jammu division is likely to receive its heaviest rainfall during this period.

“Heavy rainfall is likely, especially over the plains of Jammu and adjacent hilly areas of the Pir Panjal range, including areas like Reasi and Udhampur. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected in Chenab valley,” he said.

The MET director said the expected rainfall would bring significant relief from the prevailing heat.

“Overall, the ongoing heat wave is likely to ease significantly in the coming days. The weather is expected to remain generally cloudy, although humidity levels are likely to rise,” Ahmad said.

He noted that nights continue to remain unusually warm with minimum temperatures hovering around 25°C in Central Kashmir including Srinagar and surrounding areas.

“There should be some relief in the coming days as maximum temperatures are expected to cool. The drop in minimum temperatures may not be as significant, but night conditions are also likely to become somewhat more comfortable,” Ahmad added.
