Ten Hag signs Wout Weghorst as Marco Silva's Benfica looks for alternatives

Twente have signed 33-year-old striker Wout Weghorst to a two-year contract at the club where Erik ten Hag is technical director, cutting off a potential path for Marco Silva’s Benfica and pushing them towards other attacking options.

The Dutch striker left Ajax at the end of his contract after two seasons in which he scored 20 goals in 65 appearances.

He is currently playing for the Netherlands at the World Cup and is still waiting for his first minutes at the tournament.

Weghorst was considered by Benfica, especially under former coach Jose Mourinho, but is not seen by the hierarchy as a priority at this stage of the market.

Marco Silva believes the required striker profile has been identified and is under control, although the club are keeping Weghorst’s name under review should their plan change towards a different type of striker.

Benfica are now prioritizing other options for the attacking line, with Cruzeiro striker Caio Jorge added to the list and squad planning for the 2026/27 season continues.
