IMD forecasts heavy rain and strong winds over Mumbai; flooding disrupts Western Railway operations
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds over Mumbai and surrounding areas on Wednesday even as heavy rain-induced flooding disrupted rail traffic on the Western Railway network.
According to the IMD, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain expected at isolated places in Palghar. Wind speeds of 60-70 kmph are also likely in parts of the Konkan region.
The Met Office said rainfall is expected to gradually decrease from July 9. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg may also experience heavy rainfall in isolated places.
The IMD warned that intense rainfall may lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods, disruption of road, rail, air and ferry services, rough seas along the Konkan coast, landslides in vulnerable areas, and damage to crops and weak structures. He advised people to avoid flooded areas, check road conditions before traveling and take precautions during thunderstorms.
The weather department added that from July 12, after an initial period of heavy rain, light to moderate rainfall is expected in most areas.
