Coles Flybuys 'pay with points' change saves up to $100

Coles shoppers can save up to $100 on groceries, making a big difference in the way they spend their Flybuys points.

In a nationwide rollout starting on Wednesday, the supermarket giant’s new “pay with points” scheme will allow customers to use their points faster and more flexibly to save on grocery shopping at Coles.

Under the new system, Flybuys members with 2,000 points can choose to redeem for $10, $20, $30, $50, $70 or $100 depending on their points balance and total spend.

This will be capped at 20,000 points and will potentially save the customer $100 on essentials for the week.

Wednesday’s announcement is an attempt to roll out major supermarket rival Woolworths’ own Everyday Rewards scheme, which allows members with at least 2,000 points to save $10 per store or use a ‘bank before Christmas’ option and redeem their points at the end of the year.

For $7 a month or $70 a year, Woolworths shoppers can save 10 per cent at one store every month.

Previously, Flybuys members could save a maximum of $10 per store at Coles.

From 19 August, Coles rewards will also be extended to select Liquorland stores.

Coles chief customer officer Michael Courtney said paying with points would give customers more choice and value when shopping in store.

“Our customers are looking for practical ways to save and pay with points that make it easier to use the points they’ve already earned to pay for in-store purchases right at the checkout,” he said.

“For customers with points in their Flybuys account, this is an easy way to get great value, and those points can now help pay for more of your weekly shop purchases.”

The changes come as more than 50 per cent of Flybuys members who shopped at Coles in the past year made at least one $10 purchase at their store.

Flybuys CEO Anna Lee said paying with points gives members an easy and flexible way to use the points they’ve already earned.

“Millions of members who shop at Coles already have enough points to redeem. Paying with points gives members more choice in how they redeem their points across our many partners,” she said.
